Ada County Jail Release Routes
A person can leave Ada County Jail by several routes. A valid bond or court order may authorize release to the community. A county sentence may end through time served. Pretrial Services may supervise a person whom the court releases before the case ends. Other departures are transfers to the Idaho Department of Correction, ICE, another jail, or an agency that holds legal authority. A transfer is continued custody, not community release.
| Departure | Best confirming source |
|---|---|
| Bond or court order | ACSO release entry plus the Ada iCourt order |
| County sentence completed | ACSO stay/release record and court judgment |
| Transfer to IDOC | IDOC physical location and sentence detail |
| Other custodian | ACSO transfer entry and accepting agency |
The current roster cannot settle which route occurred. It lists people housed at the jail and warns that it updates every 24 hours. ACSO says current status can be confirmed only in person or by calling 208-577-3000. When the destination matters, ask whether the person left for the community or was transferred, and request the effective date and time.
Confirm Ada County Jail Release
Start with the ACSO Current Arrests report. It can retain an arrest record for up to five days after a person drops from the roster. The report shows a status letter, but ACSO publishes no official legend for the observed I and O codes. Treat an O as a useful lead, not final proof.
- Search Current Arrests by the broadest useful arrest window and match name, age, agency, charge, and arrest date.
- Check the current inmate roster. Presence reports current placement as of its timestamp; absence proves neither release nor destination.
- Call ACSO at 208-577-3000 with full name, date of birth, and booking or JID when known. Ask whether the person left for the community or another custodian.
- Open Idaho iCourt for the Ada case and read the order that supplied legal authority.
- Request the jail transaction when documentary proof matters. The broader Ada County released inmate search explains how these sources fit together.
Ada County Jail Release Records
For a durable record, use the ACSO public-record request route. Identify the person with full name, date of birth, known booking dates, and booking or JID. Ask for the booking and stay record plus the entry that reflects release or transfer. If maintained and open to disclosure, request the effective date and time, authority, accepting agency, and disposition of each hold or detainer. A detainer is a request by another authority to keep or transfer the person.

ACSO policy supports prisoner records with arrival data, arrest information, court dates, holds, detainers, and current status. That does not mean every internal field must be released. Protected facts may be withheld or redacted. The sheriff's page also contains a special warning about requests from current and former inmates, so ask the office how that rule applies rather than guessing.
Ada County Jail Custody Facts
Ada County Jail is the county's adult jail, operated by the Ada County Sheriff's Office at 7210 Barrister Drive in Boise. It holds people before trial, people serving qualifying local sentences, and people awaiting transfer. The roster excludes juveniles. A state prisoner belongs in IDOC's Resident/Client Search, while a federal or immigration transfer requires the receiving authority's locator.
Bond information can appear on the roster when release is possible. Eligibility does not prove departure. The jail instructions make bond charge-specific and require the bond amount plus a $25 administrative fee for each charge, reduced to one fee when a judge groups charges under one case number. Payment can be cash, cashier's check, money order, or a bail-bond service. Personal checks and credit cards are not accepted.
Ada County Jail Release Authority
Release processing follows legal authority, not a web status alone. ACSO policy identifies a court order, valid bond, prosecutor instruction, or handoff to the agency with jurisdiction as possible grounds. Inmate Records checks the paperwork and system entries and completes required victim notification. Security must verify that the correct person leaves. A court order can explain why release was authorized, yet it may precede the actual exit while staff resolve another warrant or hold.
- Release
- Departure from jail to the community under lawful authority.
- Transfer
- Movement from ACSO to another custodian while custody continues.
- Time served
- Completion of the confinement required by the judgment.
- Pretrial supervision
- Court-ordered community monitoring while the criminal case remains open.
Compare the jail transaction with iCourt when bond, dismissal, sentence credit, or probation caused the departure. The court docket can outlast the short web window, but it does not by itself prove the moment a person cleared the jail.
Ada County Jail History
The jail opened in 1977 with 160 jail beds and a 32-space work-release design. ACSO now reports 1,116 beds. That growth is the facility-page angle identified in the Ada research, and it gives context to the present campus without serving as a release count.
In 2023, a proposed $49 million bond would have supported a 294-bed expansion and related infrastructure. It missed the required supermajority by about 900 votes from roughly 105,000 cast. Those figures describe a dated public debate, not the number of people released, the current daily population, or the speed of release processing. The same 2023 annual report described close to 1,000 people in custody on an average day and more than 2,000 people managed through pretrial, alternative sentencing, and misdemeanor probation programs.
No reviewed source promises one release gate, fixed daily hour, weekend schedule, waiting area, or universal ride process. Families should call before traveling. Pretrial Services may offer narrow resources such as bus passes or hygiene kits to supervised defendants, but that fact should not be read as a benefit provided in every jail release.
Older Ada County Jail Releases
Current Arrests uses the arrest date for its five-day clock. It is not a permanent release archive. Once that window closes, repeated roster searches are unlikely to find a person who has left. Search the Ada iCourt case, then request the jail record with every known booking date and identifier. ACSO merges multiple histories under the oldest law-enforcement number, so added identifiers reduce false matches.
If the departure was to IDOC, use the statewide search and read status beside current physical location. If it was federal or immigration custody, follow the named accepting agency. Do not infer the destination from silence in one system. Note: Record access and custody status are different questions, and each government source answers only the part within its authority.
